swift watch at chapman elementary

I did not take many pictures in Portland, but we had the best time.
it was summer, and we did everyhting you're supposed to do:

- stay at Ace hotel (which was really really nice)
- eat LOTS of food cart food (it's food cart heaven!)
- have coffee at stumptown
- spend hours at Powell's, which is truly amazing
- ride bikes all over town
- watch thousands of swifts disappear into the chimney of chapman elementary school
- grow a mustache (not all of us)

this is the last post of our pacific northwest trip of september 2012.
thanks for coming along, and for all your nice comments.

xx
Christine

timberline lodge at mt hood is one of the coolest buildings I've ever seen.
taking pictures was difficult because the interior was quite dark, but you can read more here.

white salmon, 2

white salmon

white salmon

we stayed in white salmon, a small town near the columbia river, in a really nice place we found via Airbnb.
it is the gate house to a slightly larger house, a little studio above a workshop.
the timber cladding of the gate house is reclaimed from an old barn.

the owners also showed us around the larger house (stunning, you can see pictures of it here).
usually they rent out only one of the two buildings, and then live in the other.
they said they had traveled all over the world, but found this to be one of the most beautiful places.
with the sun setting over the mountains, we couldn't disagree.

possibly my favorite light moment of the whole trip:
arriving in white salmon at dusk.

hello!

la push

the beach at la push with its huge washed-out logs and its reliably murky weather
(due to its location between olympic mountains and pacific ocean)
was even more beautiful than I had imagined it.
