our apartment came without a kitchen,
and we decided to get a nice one, one that we can sell on to the next tenant some day
because it fits the space (looong and narrow) perfectly.
so at least designing fancy kitchens for the last year did pay off a little.

the kitchen is from ikea,
simple matte white doors with an oak worktop.
having it installed was almost as much as what we paid for the units,
so we decided to do it ourselves,
with T's job at the university coming very handy
because the woodshop let us borrow all the tools we needed.

it was a lot of work, but also fun,
and looking at it every day still makes us very proud!

  3. Wirklich schön, und immer toll, wenn man etwas selbst machen kann. Ich wünschte wir hätten so viel Platz für Küchenmöbel. Unsere Küche ist soo unpraktisch, aber dafür gemütlich ;)

  6. Oh I love it all! It's so modern but classic at the same time. And like Charlotte, I wish we could do stuff like that in rented properties in Toronto!

  7. Perfekte Küche. Besonders die Arbeitsfläche aus Holz mag ich. Die Küche ist das wichtigste in einer Wohnung für mich, hier sind die leider meist dunkel und klein.

  10. thanks for the nice words everyone! I really love having a kitchen with good natural light, the last one we had was so dark.

cara: yes, most rentals in Germany either come without a kitchen, or the tenant who is leaving is asking the new tenant for some money to leave the existing kitchen. this can be just a few euros or quite a bit of money, depending of the condition of the kitchen. actually I saw one place where the previous tenant was asking for an insane 3000 euros for a kitchen, so we didn't even bother to look at that apartment.

Celine: Ikea kitchens are actually really affordable, especially if you stick to the basic units with doors (anything with lots of drawers is way more expensive), and the quality is surprisingly good. the solid wood countertops are also well priced I thought, and so much nicer than the the ugly laminated tops.
